Over 30 years, we have grown from a small startup into a multinational company with over 60 locations in 16 countries and annual net sales of €11.8 billion in 2019. Our customers include all the world’s leading chipmakers including Intel, Samsung and TSMC. We provide them with everything they need – hardware, software and services – to mass produce patterns on silicon wafers.

Innovating to the extreme
Working on the nanometer scale offers challenges unseen in any other industry, driving our teams to innovate across all fields and disciplines. Over 20 years of sustained R&D brought us the development of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. As the only supplier of such advanced equipment, our engineers are responsible for continuing to develop and perfect entirely new technologies. How to generate EUV light is a good example. To generate this light with a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, a 30-kilowatt laser fires at tin droplets 50,000 times per second, hitting each droplet twice. The laser vaporizes the tin droplets, creating a plasma hotter than the surface of the sun. This then emits the EUV light — and all of this takes place in a vacuum.
From creating structures on a nanometer level to creating plasma using lasers and liquid metal, a lot of the work done at ASML is hard to wrap your head around. But we are dedicated to solving seemingly impossible problems, and it is due to the determination of our engineers that we succeed.
